Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Cohen | | As the holiday of Pesach approaches, I was struck by article in yesterday's New York Times that focuses on the message of freedom in today's world. What does it mean to be free? Who is enslaved?
This week many of us were liberated from technology due to the storm. Of course, technology is a blessing but only if we are in control of how it impacts our lives and not when it takes control of us. How fortuitous that the headlines in the paper read - "And on the Sabbath, The iPhone shall Rest".
The article describes an experiment from sundown Friday, March 19th to sundown Saturday, the brainchild of Reboot (www.rebooters.net), a nonprofit think tank of hip, media savvy Jewish professionals. In the true spirit of Shabbat, the group campaigns to set aside texting and tweeting for a day to "unplug" from the world. Learn more by visiting http://www.sabbathmanifesto.org/.
This Shabbat will be a beautiful day. Take some extra time to unplug:
1. Daven More Slowly
2. Take a Walk with Family or a Friend
3. Reflect on a Torah message and share your idea at the Shabbat meal
4. Go outside and meditate on the G-d's Glory
Tomorrow marks the first Shabbat of spring - a perfect time for renewal. As we prepare for Pesach, the time of spiritual freedom, let's unplug from our constrictions and plug into a higher and deeper reality.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and Chag Kasher Vesameach,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
